Education

Training activities

The Education and Training (E&T) Program of the Swiss Center for Affective Sciences organizes the following training activities:

  • CISA Lecture Series
  • Graduate Seminars
  • Professional skills workshops
  • Thematic workshops
  • Symposia
  • Courses
  • Annual Research Forum
  • International Summer School in Affective Sciences (ISSAS)

All activities (invited lectures, seminars, workshops, courses) can be organized on demand, following the suggestions made by the doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers themselves.

The members of the Graduate School can obtain credit for their participation in the activities organized by the E&T program. Credit can also be obtained from activities (summer schools, conferences, courses, workshops, etc.) organized by another academic institution. Previous approval of the E&T committee is necessary in the latter case, and credit is allocated on a case-by-case basis. Students can also obtain credit through outreach (knowledge transfer) activities organized by the Center.

CISA Lecture Series

Regular lectures are organized at the Centre Interfacultaire en Sciences Affectives (CISA), located at the Campus Biotech of the University of Geneva. The typical duration of each lecture is 1 hour, taking place once per month.  The lecture series is intended to provide a forum for renowned scientists and scholars from varied disciplinary backgrounds who have made a significant contribution in their field of research to the Affective Sciences. The CISA Lectures are open to the general public.

Graduate Seminars

The Graduate Seminars are teaching sessions by the advanced researchers affiliated to the Center or external invited faculty. They are designed to provide our doctoral school and postdoctoral researchers with a common ground of basic interdisciplinary knowledge in the affective sciences. These seminars are practical and interactive, providing an overview of an area of interest to the field and ample opportunity for debate and exercises. The Graduate Seminars take place once every two months and they are compulsory for the members of the doctoral school. The typical duration is 4 hours.

Workshops

Two types of workshop are organized at the Center.

(1)  Thematic workshops (or symposia) are organized around a common topic of interest to various disciplines in the affective sciences. The typical duration of a thematic meeting is 1 to 2 days.

(2)  Professional skills workshops aim to improve the essential academic competences of the researchers at the Center with training in transversal skills such as academic writing, conference presentation or career planning. The typical duration of a professional skills workshop is 1 day.

Annual Research Forum (ARF)

Once a year the members of the Center are offered the opportunity to discuss their research with their fellow researchers in the network, young and advanced. The typical duration of the Annual Research Forum is 1 day. Attendance is compulsory for all members of the doctoral program.

International Summer School in Affective Sciences (ISSAS)

A major feature of the Education and Training Program is the International Summer School in Affective Sciences (ISSAS), which addresses both thematic and methodological issues concerning specific topics of interest in the affective sciences. ISSAS involves extensive teaching by members of the Center and invited faculty members. The typical duration of the International Summer School in Affective Sciences is 7 to 10 days. More information can be found on the ISSAS page.
