Several projects in the proposed NCCR address pertinent issues in the area of health, including:
- psychological and psychobiological predispositions for well-being and emotional disorders;
- effects of brain lesions on socio-emotional competence and social behavior;
- personality predispositions (impulsivity, appraisal biases, motivational imbalance) as determinants of affective malfunctioning and emotional disorders;
- health problems due to poor coping skills (e.g., burnout) as well as other health problems directly linked to stress (e.g., back problems, cardiovascular disease);
- well-being and positive emotion frequency as policy-relevant indicators of quality of life;
- the effect of emotions and mood on the subjective perception of health symptoms and differential health evaluations by men and women, as well as the aged;
- the role of emotional climate in the family as social support and buffer against antisocial tendencies or emotional maladjustment; and
- socioemotional changes in self-concept and self-esteem as risk factors for depression and suicide.
