The status of Associate has been created for two reasons:
1) Affiliate leading researchers in areas that are of central importance for some of the individual core projects, and, in particular, the research foci, thereby integrating disciplines that are not fully represented by the project leaders, and
2) Prepare an evolution of the NCCR and the research issues investigated in directions that have already been discussed among the applicants and the associates but that, for various reasons, could not yet be formulated and funded during the first period.
The Statutes of the NCCR define the status of Associate as follows:
2.8. Associates
Scientists whose research is likely to contribute significantly to the NCCR are eligible for the status of Associate of AffSci. Associates are appointed by the Director after consulting the Steering Board. Associates are not funded for research by the NCCR, although some of the cost for the participation in scientific meetings of the NCCR by themselves or their collaborators may be assumed.
